Inspiring intellectual curiosity

Kichijo Girls’ School was founded in 1938 by two scholars, Mr. Susabio Moriya, a geographer who established Teikoku-Shoin, a company known for publishing text books and atlases, and his son Dr. Mikao Moriya, a mathematician who was a professor at the University of Tokyo and later became the president of Sophia University. Their sincere and continuous efforts in learning have formed the basis of our educational policy. People do not cease to learn after they graduate from junior high school, high school or university. The Moriyas demonstrate the importance of cultivating intellectual curiosity and continuing to learn throughout life.

Taking responsibility for your words and actions

Dr. Mikao Moriya used to say, “Japanese people tend to conform to others’ opinions without thinking for themselves when forming their own opinions, and they tend to conform to others’ actions without contemplating for responsibilities when deciding they should act. These are their major flaws.” It is important to think for yourself and speak sincerely in your own words when expressing an opinion or exchanging opinions with others. It is also important to act responsibly not only for yourself but also for the group or society. We aspire to educate students with these qualities.

Respecting each other’s values

There are times when your values differ from or conflict with others’. On these occasions, you need to converse with others with an open mind. By conversing with others, you may find that your values still differ. However, in the course of interacting, you may be able to have new ideas or perspectives. Respecting each other’s values will help you become more social, cooperative, and international. We place importance not only on inspiring individuality but also on students respecting each other’s values.
